The Aoyama Family: A Legacy in Harp Making
The Aoyama family business boasts a rich history dating back to 1897, with roots in the skilled craftsmanship of musical instruments. The pioneering family head, Jitaroh Aoyama, established the Aoyama Musical Instrument Manufacturing Company in Fukui, Japan. Initially, the company focused on the repair of various instruments, including violins and organs.
Jitaroh Aoyama’s descendant, Masao Aoyama, possessed a deep passion for the harp. Upon assuming control of the business, Masao dedicated himself to crafting these exquisite instruments. Leveraging his skills and artistic inspiration, Masao spearheaded the production of the Aoyama Folk Harps, establishing a new chapter in the family’s legacy.
The current successor, Kenzo Aoyama, further expanded the company’s offerings by introducing the production of Grand Concert Harps. This move propelled the Aoyama company to international recognition, placing them among the elite ranks of global harp makers.
Kenzo Aoyama’s leadership marked a significant milestone in 1992 with the completion of a new Aoyama harp factory. This state-of-the-art facility incorporated a concert hall and a museum dedicated to showcasing antique harps. The new space served as a testament to the Aoyama family’s enduring commitment to the art of harp making.
The Aoyama family’s core values, embodied in the motto “Be honest and do your best work,” resonate throughout the company culture. Skilled artisans, guided by this philosophy, meticulously craft each harp, ensuring a harmonious blend of tradition and innovative techniques.
